On it’s face clearing the hard drives was obstruction of justice, no? Like, can’t they be charged with a crime on that basis alone? I’d be surprised if the courts didn’t just assume that police computers contain shit that’s probably relevant to ongoing investigations and suchlike. Cops don’t just get to take the ball and go home, it’s not their ball.
