This might just be wishful thinking but since my tendency is to find analogies in the natural world here goes: Trump’s solid base of support among Republicans isn’t as firm as it seems, but is instead like a volume of liquid that has just reached its freezing point. It will take a certain amount of time for the liquid’s temperature to drop further while the environment continues to extract the latent heat of fusion from the substance, finally allowing it to freeze.
