I think this possibly apocryphal story probably speaks to the Republicans’ real fears more than they might admit.

The British NHS was a product of WW2 when they feared massive civilian casualties from bombing or even a potential invasion and wanted to be able to provide medial services wherever needed.

Churchill wanted to abolish it, but one of the reasons he lost re-election after the was was that it turned out to be so terribly popular with the British people.
