Ohio’s new health director backed out from the job hours after her appointment was announced, saying that harassment of her predecessor played a part in her decision.

Joan Duwve, a native Ohioan who has been serving as South Carolina’s public health director, hastily resigned on Thursday hours after Gov. Mike DeWine praised her at a news conference. In statement to the State newspaper on Friday, Duwve said “conversations” in which she learned about difficulties faced by Amy Acton gave her pause and led her to ultimately reject the offer.
