The thing about this nonsensical issue is that if you’re paid wages, you’re required to submit W-4s upon initial employment, and the employer has to withhold taxes on everyone’s paychecks (or you have to do so if self-employed). So, yes, if you work, you’re paying taxes.

What happens then is that when it comes time to report your taxes by April 15 is that people under certain income levels will get refunds of the taxes paid (as well as combined with EITC and other credits/incentives). But they will have given the feds an interest free loan for the taxes withheld in the interim.

And that doesn’t count the amount of wages withheld for SS/Medicare (6.2% + 1.45%).
