re: #193 Smith25’s Liberal Thighs

This is where the legalities of NFL contracts put the power in the hands of the League and the Owners. NFL contracts are barely worth the paper that they are printed on. The money that players get paid in their deals doesn’t exist until a check is cashed(There are bonus and incentive checks that get paid on certain days of the year, but their salary is paid in 16 paychecks- for each of the 16 regular season games. If a mid-level player is inactive, and not playing in the game- they will not get paid). Baseball and Basketball players get paid every dollar in a contract guaranteed(outside of specific voids). A NFL player can be cut for any reason, without warning, and the contract money is not guaranteed. How many players would risk this?

I get the feeling their is so much heat on this issue because all the players look at those other sports and wonder what the hell they can do to get that in the NFL.

Tons of discussions going on all the time about the next union contract negotiations and guaranteed contracts. Add in the dangers in the game and the player’s union should be in a decent position to get change. If they hang tough and have good leadership.

I don’t think the NFL can take another player’s strike and replacement season. That would really cost them.
