This point came up several times; had Kafka written in Czech he might have remained obscure, but writing in German helped make him known to a much broader public and eventually become a major figure in the Western Literary Canon.

German after all was the language of the empire. And definitely more German to English translators than Czech to English ones too. There’s another Czech writer from that era I want to read. I forget his name offhand but he apparently wrote some funny WWI stories.
