The findings make me wonder if my current good health results from receiving maybe only one course of antibiotics in my life (for bronchitis nine years ago) and avoiding large helpings of American meat products, which are packed with antibiotics.
You are what you eat, as the saying goes.
Also anecdotally, I was a C-section baby and I’ve had allergy problems on and off throughout my life, mostly from pollen. (The Ohio Valley just about was the worst environment for me.) The presenter mentions that C-section births have a higher incidence of autism, allergies and some other conditions I don’t remember than vaginal births, because the baby is exposed to widely different microbiomes.
The last part, about developing devices to analyze a person’s microbiome climate and from that diagnosing ailments and suggesting treatments, reminds me a lot of the med bay in Star Trek and Bones’ medical tricorder. It seems like Trek may have predicted yet another technology besides cellphones and iPads.
