I’d have to check but I think the closest was 1916 where Wilson lost NJ and Hughes did win NY but I think it was close. Technically 2000 since Gore lost TN and Bush lost CT but Bush has no political career in CT.

I think Bush was considered from Texas. Since that was his residency at the time. (I also remember, vaguely, someone on Fox or maybe Limbaugh, saying Gore won his home state of DC as some sort of joke/criticism)

Interestingly, Nixon in 1968 was considered a New Yorker rather than a Californian - but in every other national race he ran (‘52, ‘56, ‘60, and ‘72) he was considered a Californian.
