The experience of the former DDR is very similar to that of Czech Republic (and the former Czechoslovakia). Add in that the territory of the present-day ČR has been a battlefield for the great empires of Europe - and that when large numbers of foreigners showed up, it meant nothing but death, despair and oppression for the locals. That’s left quite an impression on the Czech mind, to say the least. Hell, the Thirty Years War wiped out about one-third of the Czech population.
