heh, I actually got in a 3 hour long bar conversation with a nice couple (at the Spints Alehouse in SE, for you Portlanders) who had just moved to Portland from Arizona, and boy, they had a lot to say about racism in Arizona. Talked the politics of white retirees selling their homes in more expensive parts of the country, moving to Arizona where land is plentiful and the weather agrees with them, and creating an increasingly hostile political and nativist environment on all fronts for the latinos (legal and illegal) living there.

Just an anecdote! This made me think of it.

When I was about to move to New Mexico from Everett, WA, I told the young lady making my sandwich where I was moving to. She said, “Oh, I used to live there.” I asked how she liked it. she said, “I didn’t. Too many Mexicans.” Her Korean-American boss and I had to make sure we didn’t accidentally trade jaws as we retrieved them from the floor.
