Perps don’t always stop bullets.

Someone else could get in the way.

A bullet can ricochet and hit an unintended target.

If I am not mistaken, in such situations, cops are taught not to fire at perps.

Such nuance is beyond most gun nuts, though.

You are mistaken: If a situation where someone is just attacking at random, police are taught to eliminate the threat quickly. If they have a reasonably clean shot they’ll take it.
