Wanting to repeal the 17th amendment is now part of RWNJ dogma (for those that can count that high). I’ve never understood why it’s so much better for a state legislature to pick Senators than for the people to vote on it.
My best guess is that it is a consequence of RWNJ neo-Confederacy, where any opportunity to increase ‘states rights’ is taken, no matter how asinine.
The reason is simple.
You can gerrymander local voting districts to ensure a Republican majority in a statehouse, even if there are a majority of independents and Democrats in the state.
With a gerrymandered statehouse, you can then select two Senators who are Republicans, even if they wouldn’t win a statewide election.
But repealing that would work the same as repealing the II Amendment: Start counting states that would reject it, when you get to 14, the amendment fails.
