What I find telling is the people who knew Trump the most i.e. New Yorkers especially people in NYC rejected him overwhelmingly. That to me really says something and that people who only really knew him as “that success business guy on the Apprentice” embraced him the most.

That’s usually the way it goes. The same thing happened here w/ Walker. Milwaukee hated him. But, then you have the blitzkrieg of PAC ads and well, possible Russian collusion in Trump’s case & Wheee the right-wing hops on the train to dipshitville.
