Scotland is small - population 5 million cf England 67 mill. Economically they will not do well on their own which is why the referendum failed.
Absolutely, that explains why Denmark, population 5.749 million is so much poorer than the UK. Wait, what?

The referendum on Scottish independence failed because the UK warned that independence would mean leaving the EU and the EU is very popular in Scotland.
