So, arguably, the GOP is still considered a viable political party in spite of its heinous vision and ignorant policies, even if they are increasingly forced to rely on local and state legislatures to enact their horrid ideas.

I don’t know if I want to see a Republican Party emerge from this anarchic race to the bottom if it simply means a return to, say, the party of Bush II. Viability in a national race and the opportunity to nominate Supreme Court Justices again after the hell they’ve wrought in the last few years is deeply demoralising.

And yet, I don’t feel that it’s healthy for the Democratic Party to provide both liberal and rational conservative politicians because the GOP is unable to produce the latter. But I don’t have enough of an understanding of how American politics tends to evolve to be able to say how, when the dust from the mid-terms has cleared, the Republicans will adapt their message.

I want the Democrats to remain in charge but I don’t want the opposition to act like a malignant tumour either.
