If there were a handful of Republicans willing to actually join this fight, I would absolutely agree with you. But whatever McConnell has on the rest of his caucus is obviously strong enough to keep them in line for a lot of terrible appointments. So, I think someone like Flake would make a stand on the first one but then back the second one; or Paul would have a last minute change of heart. Maybe the Democrats pick up a couple of surprise wins in the Senate come November and that scares some Republicans into acting right, but until that happens, we have to recognize that the GOP has enough votes to go along with Trump.

It’s the difference between “She’s a bad candidate who was approved by a bipartisan majority” and “He’s an absolute shit candidate who the Republicans own entirely.” I would rather the GOP be stuck owning that “worse” candidate” because Yertle twisted their arms than be stuck owning Haspel because “She’s the best we can get.”
