It would depend on the context, especially in this case where Cattuzzo had dealt with rampant sexism and harassment even before her big tweet, and then the avalanche of death threats and even more misogyny after.

Even with that caveat, even without that specific context, I would definitely give less leeway to the guy in that case because more often than not, gaming environments encourage exactly that kind of behavior, even glorify it. Gamergate was (and in many ways still is) a thing after all. Misogyny is an issue that’s plagued gamer culture for decades and has become only more visible with time. And while I believe there have been cases of sponsored streamers dropped for various reasons, I rarely have seen one with this kind of statement claiming outright victimhood the way Razer Brazil’s did.

So even if the situations were equal, a male and female spokesperson for a private company issuing equally venomous statements to followers and receiving equally venomous responses…you’d still feel the guy having his position as a spokesperson yanked would be okay because of other male gamers being misogynist assholes?
