I never thought of Florida as “the south”. I lived there for a few months as a teenager and was chatting with a co-worker who was a lifelong, native Floridian, a lady probably in her mid to late 60’s and, I don’t recall what we were talking about, but she said (in a glorious southern twang I never thought of as Floridian), “Honey, you don’t get any further south than Florida.”
Florida is funny since northern Florida is more “southern.” I had a professor from Jacksonville. Had quite the drawl. Excellent lit professor. Wrote a paper on Richard Wright in his class.
