Perhaps the DNC should do their thing like NJPW.

Put the 20 candidates into two blocks.

In each block, each candidate goes one-on-one with the others, so each candidate gets 9 mini-debates (say 20 minutes).

Makes for a total of 90 mini-debates, but spread over a month period it wouldn’t be too bad. And we’d be able to see how the individuals do in response to real questions.

Each debate can be scored. Then the A block winner faces the B block winner for a longer debate.

Let dozens of candidates debate, no matter how implausible. Then feed the 3 lowest-juried losers to NYC subway rats. The field will shake out in no time.
