People were fed up with politicians and politics as usual, that made it easier for them to buy into the image of Trump as the ultimate political outsider, not beholden to any special interests and ready to come in and shake things up the way they wanted to see it done.

His lack of record of public service was a benefit, and the lack of transparency about his private business record was not a burden.

Perhaps so but since then that’s all moot. People know what a Trump presidency actually looks like now and more are unhappy with it than not.
