That’s not wholly true, but some of the dislike does come from a distrust of government. Despite their embodying the government’s ability to use force, police win a partial exemption to that distrust in large part because law enforcement is one the few tasks that the vast majority of conservatives agree cannot be privatized: It must be done by the government.

It’s a selective distrust of government. If conservatives truly had a mistrust of the government. They wouldn’t be voting against marijuana legalization(look at where the marijuana legalization did its worst in Colorado and Washington), they wouldn’t not merely be opposed to gay marriage but want a federal ban on it, and they wouldn’t be screwing around with existing rights to abortion. Conservative mistrust of government is a myth. They don’t like the government being used in social welfare but as a whole, conservatives are as if not more big government than liberals are.
