I still marvel that so much of each generation ditches the optimism and humanity they had when they were young and embraces the bitterness and fear as their elders

Back in 1973, the retired School Superintendent of my rural school district said to me “Of course people get more conservative as they age. What bothers me is when these young people who are conservative. They become extremists.”
