Hotel California may have been their magnum opus (and there are a few songs beside the eponymous track that I like, such as “Wasted Time” and “Pretty Maids All in a Row”), but, for an Eagles album that I love from beginning to end, it’s Desperado for me.
There’s just not a bad song on that album.
There was a lot of stuff from that period that I grew up hearing and a lot of Eagles was in that. If their songs come on the radio, I sing along.
But of the music from that era that I will actually willingly sit down and listen to? Fleetwood Mac “Rumors” & Side A of “Boston” Those still remain fresh to me all these years later. I can listen to a lot of the rest and even enjoy it but for them I’ll need the same kind of palate cleanser I did then - Patti Smith, The Clash, Blue Oyster Cult, The Who, The Ramones, The Replacements, Husker Du, Television and so on.
But I put on Rumors the other night and from Second Hand News through The Chain to Gold Dust Woman that was as near to pop perfection as I know boiling out of an insane situation. Only “London Calling” and “Who’s Next” come close.
