Apparently it’s Gaelic in origin. Many of the Irish names in my Irish lineage have Gaelic roots or becoming more Irish than the Irish themselves like the Welsh Joyces.

There is debate about the derivation of our name. It means either “Horse Lord (Horsethief)” from Gaelic, or “Spawn of Hell” if you trace it to latinized Gaelic.
