The WHO has called for a moratorium on vaccine boosters until the end of September.

The World Health Organization’s head Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus has said the WHO is calling for a moratorium on Covid-19 vaccine boosters until at least the end of September.

He said the move was to enable that at least 10% of the population of every country was vaccinated, while WHO officials have also said it is not proven that giving booster shots to people who have already received two vaccine doses is effective in preventing the spread of Covid.

“We need instead to focus on those people who are most vulnerable, most at risk of severe disease and death, to get their first and second doses,” added Katherine O’Brien, director, immunisation vaccines and biologicals at the WHO.

I get where the WHO is coming from - vaccination is seriously lagging in the developing world and we need to get that base covered or else that’s going to act as an enormous reservoir and potential breeding ground for new, and possibly vaccine resistant, variants.
