I suspect that some of the outrage coming from the older SoCon crowd arises out of this fear - that they are losing control of their young people. Even their young who are remaining religious are turning towards new modes of thinking. There is a rise of “progressive Christians” from within the evangelical rank, and the fundamentalists are circling their wagons.

The question is: Are they Christians first and Progressives second? If they are, they’ve got a chance. But if they’re progressives first, then they’re just going to go in for the same tired policies and tropes that have left Illinois at the brink of financial catastrophe. And as such, I think they’ll just fade away. To be authentic, they must be firm in faith in God, not faith in government.
