If you have friends or relatives siding with Trump’s protectionism, challenge them to check the labels of everything they own or buy — including food. They will find most items are made abroad, because it’s cheaper. Cheaper production costs mean cheaper retail prices.

Manufacturers are not going to abandon factories they already have abroad, and build new ones in the USA. That makes no business sense at all. What they will do is raise retail prices to compensate for Trump’s tariffs. So, most everything will cost substantially more *and* no new jobs will be created in the USA.

Or if they can’t comprehend basic economics, ask them why Wal-mart abandoned its former policy of only selling products made in America. The main reasons: (1) many products were no longer being made in the USA and (2) those that were made in the USA were more expensive, and weren’t selling.
