I mean, you’re not wrong, but it does happen. The thing of it is, they compartmentalize. I look at fishfolk, and they reserve all their hatred for the aggregate: They hate black people “in general”, but that family that attends their church, oh, they’re just lovely folk. They seem to have the capability to view individual people as harmless or “not as bad”, whilst holding considerable venom for the things that those individual people stand for. The cognitive dissonance that spans the gap between those concepts never seems to accumulate for them, perhaps because they deliberately choose not to think on it. It would ruin their friendship if they allowed themselves to think of that black couple, or the Hispanic lady behind the counter, or the female secretary at the church, as poorly as they think of the stereotypes.

That seems to be what I see with my family as well. It’s sort of an unspoken “they’re a good one, if you know what I mean” thing
