Absolutely, that explains why Denmark, population 5.749 million is so much poorer than the UK. Wait, what?

The referendum on Scottish independence failed because the UK warned that independence would mean leaving the EU and the EU is very popular in Scotland.

Well, popular as the EU might be in Scotland, they are still likely to be screwed either way. With the UK out of the EU, they’re going to be just another backwater province with a small population and a small localized economy: but even if they do go through with an independence movement, there’s still no guarantee that a separate Scotland would be automatically admitted back into the Union. IIRC, admission of new members to the EU has to be by unanimous vote: and Spain has already said (though a few years back) that they would vote “no” so as not to give the Catalans any ideas….
