Redwood trees mostly grow up from shoots around a “mother tree” — if you see them in spring, you’ll see dozens of shoots growing out around the base of their trunks — so the circular pattern is common. (Their seeds are mostly infertile.)
That’s how the American Bradford Pair works as well. I keep having to cut the shoots off the roots of the one in my front yard every spring.
