Yes, the Germans even have a term for those folks: Putinversteher. They are correct in that applying Cold War terms and images to him is incorrect and misleading, but that does not make him any sort of democrat or lover of freedom.

Right, I disagree that this is another Cold War or that Putin is a Commie but he’s definitely trying to undermine Western institutions for his own and Russian interests.
