That whole article is terrifying. I’m not religious, but I’ve suspected for a while that the American right needs religion to hold their more vicious instincts in check. They don’t go for secular humanism.

LOLWUT? You might be right on principle, but the reality is that the American Right (or a decidedly non-trivial percentage of it) uses religion not to “hold their more vicious instincts in check”, but to provide an easy, non-refutable rationale for said instincts, and as an excuse to enact them into public policy.
“Religion” in this country - or at least its political manifestations on the Right - seems to have become mainly a case of “who do you hate?” - with Divine approbation of said hate the default bottom-line…
