The Old Testament’s Ten Commandments really aren’t ten: There are 513 commandments which are viewed as abominations to the Lord all in the same section of Exodus. Very few churches enforce the commandment against eating shellfish, even though that’s just as much an abomination as adultery.

Food safety laws for a primitive society. Don’t eat things that are known to cause problems sometimes. Shellfish, pork, dairy products and meat should be separated, cleanliness, etc. If you shroud those safety rules in your gods commandments,they become palatable. Add a later of mystery to them, and they become believable. Don’t mix the mothers milk with the baby’s flesh.

Quite a g good system - for safety. Primitives didn’t grok microorganisms and germ theory, but they knew how to avoid some consequences.
