It is a nightmare either way. Romney is at least not completely insane and not completely stupid. He is though a corporate stooge and everyone knows this.

I think the question in the R primaries will be whether the base will vote for a Mormon. Romney is obviously the most attractive candidate for “traditional” R’s. But he wears Magic Underwear, which makes a *huge* number of the base molto nervoso. The TPers may jump sideways to Perry, even with his warts. The man has been, if anything, consistently hard right.

We’ll see, but I’m not convinced the new rank and file will support Romney.
