I call it the Paradox of Modernity. As we get further from the past, we forget why we have things that have created our present which in an unrelated note, I think is why you see so many young people get drawn to the Nazis and white supremacists these days. WWII is a distant event for them. So too were the days before work safety regulations.

I, on the other hand, know my mother was terrorized by fucking nazis as a small child during the Blitz.
