Sounds like your executive wants the Pragmatic Programmer “build status” lava lamp setup. Basically, a red and a green lava lamp. Failure state lights the red lava lamp, success lights the green lava lamp.

(Alternatively, you could go with red-yellow-green status. Where yellow means one or more app faults of unspecified level detected. And simply always have the yellow light on.)
