(Coincidentally, I was sitting at my son’s speech appointment, where he is trying to learn how to say “s” and another consonant, and thinking how cruel it would be to be a Russian kid with the same speech problem—saying multiple consonants.

Interestingly, the closest Russian translation for “to lisp,” which is kartávit’, specifically means “to improperly pronounce the sounds of L and R”. Of course, there are technical Russian words for other “speech impediments,” such as difficulty in pronouncing “s” (which is sigmatizm, and similarly there is gammatsizm, for those who have trouble with the G/K sounds). But the only speech problem that has a non-clinical-ese name analogous to “lisp” is the L/R mispronunciation. I dunno what this means, though.
