And this is what I think so many right wing nuts are worried about. If the background checks really checked mental health as some of the gun rights advocates claim would be the solution (but then refuse to enact any such checks, because NRA), it’s possible a whole lot of the right wing nutters would find themselves unable to buy guns because of diagnosed mental health issues.

I could live with that - these folks would get the needed mental health services they need, fewer people would be in a position to engage in mass shootings, and you’d reduce the number of suicides, accidental shootings, and other homicides from a reduced number of firearms.
