Russian serfdom actually became identical to slavery in all but name under Catherine the Great, who changed the law to allow serfs to be alienated without the land. Around 1760, I believe.

Yeah Russian serfdom was particularly awful. Czar Alexander was called the liberator because of freeing the serfs.
