Politics aside, how the hell do you do astronomy in Chicago?

hell, i’m pretty sure one of the biggest refractors physically possible is still sitting in Chicago. Can’t remember what it’s called. I think Hoyle used it, or somebody famous. Of course, probably there was a bit less light pollution in the burbs in the 1920’s.
