Charles, thank you for your dignified and sensitive response to the sudden death of Andrew Breitbart. We have criticized Breitbart pretty severely here, and deservedly so, but that was while he was still alive to defend himself.
There is another factor in this as well: He was only 43 and he was a talented person in many ways. The potential existed for him to see the error of his ways and become a positive force in the world. Cynics are fond of saying that a leopard cannot change his spots, but experience shows otherwise. It happens all the time. It’s true that Breitbart might have continued on the same path as Rush Limbaugh, eventually becoming a self-parody lost in his own delusions and blinded by his own hubris. He could just as easily have taken the kind of path you (and I) have in recent years. Now that potential is gone forever.
Finally, it is my understanding that Andrew’s parents, Gerald and Arlene, are both still alive. This must be dreadful for them, they have my deepest condolences.
