IIRC (and I probably don’t, correct me as needed) — they had a parliamentary system, the Nazis were non-negligible minority who maneuvered their way into the governing coalition, then they did something violent to the rest of their coalition and blew up the Reichstag (framing the faction they most opposed)… and then everyone who wasn’t with them after that was afraid to say so out loud.
