The best advice I could ever give anyone who wanted to play guitar would be;
1= Find just one guitar that works with you. Feels good. Fits your hand. The neck works for you. And if you buy wisely and not cheaply, you will regain money if and when you sell it.
2=Get a good tube amp with headroom. No built in anything. Clean circuit. A single 10 inch speaker with 18 watts behind it would shock you.
The rest is up to you. Single coils, humbuckers, coil split, rails, blah blah. BUT good pickups will make a WORLD of difference. I can’t tell you how many players I met who had 5-10 guitars. And not a single one was worth spit.
Compression will give you sustain, Overdrive will allow you to get the grit at bedroom levels, and a good chorus and delay will deepen and widen your notes. Tune it in where your chords aren’t muddy and off you go on a lifelong search for what is rattling around in your head.
Just my humble opinion.

I’m pretty much there after 30 some years. Music Man RD-110 (too loud), Telecaster (MIM) with Bill Lawrence pups, overdrive, boost, delay and reverb. I’m looking to pick up a chorus or tremolo sometime in the next few months for a change up. I was interested in that travel multi-pedal that makeitstop mentioned, but now I’ve forgotten what it was—seemed pretty affordable.
