It’s historically a word so offensive that every child in the South who actually wore shoes during the week knew that to utter it would mean, depending on the parenting style, either being knocked across the room or sentenced to the Land of No Privileges for a long time.
It still makes me wince, even when used among people of color affectionately, which it routinely is, here.
