The fact that making abortion illegal causes unsafe abortions is totally lost on the pro life zealots, who think banning a medical procedure that has a real demand will magically prevent people from seeking it out anyways.

Not sure about that part, many of the ones I have talked to openly acknowledge that back alley abortions will come back. They are perfectly fine with that even though it puts women at risk. Basically the attitude is “that is what she gets for not using birth control, sleeping around, having sex outside of marriage, or whatever.”

Some people have even told me they don’t really care what the women do, as long as they are not asked to condone it or pay for it. These folks are mortally offended that it is legal because they feel that it amounts to society (and themselves by extension) pardoning child killers.

A huge percentage of them are also convinced regardless of all available evidence that their taxes are being used to pay for the abortions of poor women. They say that this makes them feel complicit in the act of murdering a child against their will.

You can explain about the1980 Harris v. McRae ruling and the Hyde amendment until you are blue in the face and not change their minds about government funding. “What about medicaid?” is one of their favorite boogeymen because they are sure they have you now.

There are currently 15 states that allow Medicaid to pay for abortions in some or all circumstances. But that is the states choice and done with state funds, not the Federal governments, you’d thinks these states rights supporters would understand that part at least.

Anyway, it is my experience that many DO know that making abortion illegal will not stop it. They. Don’t. Care. They just want society to go back to pretending it doesn’t exist and to keep the imagined “blood”* off their own hands.

*Thereby exchanging it for the real blood of women that they will be partially responsible for killing. :(
