re: #176 Dr. Shalit

“dopp” -

My Great Uncle, Isadore Shapiro, used to buy calves in Iselin. Slaughtered them there, and brought them back to his Grocery/Butcher Store in Metuchen in his 1952 Chevrolet Green “Woodie” Station Wagon. Store was about 2 blocks from Campbell School. His mechanic was a “Black” fellow by the name of Moses who looked uncannily like Isaac Hayes without the sunglasses. So as my first impression of language was that as you got older, your language changed (to Yiddish) - my first impression of “Black Folks” was of strong competent people who knew how to fix cars.

I read your post to my husband and he said, “Oh, yeah, he must have bought the calves from Cooper.” He also tells me the Coopers were responsible for the first Christmas lights, when they gave Thomas Edison permission to string them up on their property. Edison was just promoting his electric company, but it kind of caught on.
