I had an English teacher back in the day, who corrected every improper use of “it’s” by crossing it out and writing, in red ink, “IT IS”

Students who were egregious in committing this error would be asked to read their composition out loud to the class.

That was drummed into my brain so hard.

The thing with its and it’s is that to NOT put in the apostrophe violates the rule. But that’s English for you - I before E, except after C, or in a bunch of other more or less random words.
