re: #174 The Very Reverend Battleaxe of Knowledge

I always go back to 2004. Only the election fraud in Ohio (that freaked Karl Rove out when it didn’t work in 2012) prevented Kerry from winning an Electoral College victory while losing the Popular Vote by 3,000,000—exactly like tRump. Does anybody think that would have been allowed to stand?

Dubya’s fixers were expecting that to happen in 2000 and were all set to hit the ground running to turn it back—they were caught flat-footed when it turned out the other way around. The Electoral College bullshit will only ever work for Republicans. You can take that to the bank.

The electoral college was designed to help the less popular national party. That was the real point of the three fifths compromise. But I think if we had back to back elections where the party with fewer national votes had won the presidency (especially being from different parties), we probably would have seen real change.

A few years back a Supreme Court Justice (I forget which one) made the point in a speech that under any other circumstances the electoral college would be unconstitutional (this of course was spun by wingnuts as “liberal justice says the constitution is unconstitutional”). And the point is true, if a state tried to elect a governor on the same basis the court would throw it out in a heart beat. It really does fly in the face of the concept of one person, one vote.
