So, my taxes are done… and my refund was down significantly. My tax bill was also higher (due mostly to caps on SALT) - I can still itemize, but it wasn’t as much as prior years. So even with the withholding changes and so called tax cuts, I paid more in tax.
I actually got quite a bit back, much more than I expected, even with the SALT caps because I ended up giving much more to charity (for reasons unrelated to the tax changes), so my itemized deductions were more. But I got back a little less than in prior years. I probably gained overall—I’d have to balance the slightly lower return with the slightly higher bump I got in my paychecks.
